WORKSHOP WITH SALLY-ANNE LLOYD - MAPPING
SUNDAY 3RD NOVEMBER 2024

On a dull November morning, fourteen ladies joined Sally for a day of stitching and creativity.  Sally began with a few quick drawing exercises – with our eyes closed and then with our non-writing hand we were invited to scribble down quick images based on the description of an imaginary walk in the park.  None of us was impressed with our sketches, but it certainly broke the ice!

 

Sally went on to talk about what a map might be, expanding it beyond the traditional Ordnance Survey or Google versions to a mapping of ideas, people, things or places in our lives, inviting us to stretch our thoughts beyond the obvious.  She showed examples of techniques she’d used on a series of works based on places, the pets she’d owned and finally her epic run and cycle race across Scotland, talking us through her thought process for each.  Then it was down to work.

 

Tracing elements of a random map through tissue paper, we selected the parts to stitch, perhaps layering fabric and paper map to be later cut away in appliqué or reverse appliqué.  After a break for lunch and a stretch of aching shoulders, we were invited to resume the exercise we’d begun, or to start on another map of our choice.  As the needles flew, Sally talked through her process of development starting from original inspiration until she arrived at an idea she could begin to stitch.

 

All too soon, it was time to share what we had achieved; the results were laid out on the table – all striking and so different!  Of course, they weren’t finished, but we were brimming with ideas of how to complete them, or to start again in our own time.  An inspiring day full of stitch and chat – we’d all enjoyed ourselves immensely.
