Lynn Hulse delves into the fascinating early history of the Royal School of Needlework and its remarkable founder, Lady Victoria Welby. Discover how, in 1872, Welby set out to rescue embroidery from its Victorian decline, restore it to the status of a fine decorative art, and create opportunities for women in difficult circumstances. From its early success in Britain to its groundbreaking appearance at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition, Lynn reveals the story behind the School’s rise to international fame.

Stephanie Smart – Behind the Scenes at The House of Embroidered Paper and the making of the Regency Wardrobe
Stephanie Smart creates extraordinary life-sized garments entirely from paper and thread, combining free-machine embroidery, hand-stitching, drawing and applied decoration. Inspired by historical fashion, social history and personal stories, her work is both beautiful and technically ambitious. In this fascinating talk, Stephanie will introduce her unique practice and The House of Embroidered Paper, sharing highlights from her acclaimed Regency Wardrobe collection and the stories behind the pieces. She will also reveal a glimpse of her exciting new collection, being created with Historic Royal Palaces for exhibition in 2027.

We will be making beautiful birds from felt following patterns from the book “Folk Embroidered Felt Birds’ by Corinne Lapierre.
Kits will be provided to make these delightful birds which can be embroidered in your own style but we will be exploring notably Chain Stitch under guidance from Janet Edmonds.

Learn how to build up colour, texture and imagery using wool fibres and a felting needle, creating your own unique design to take home as a coaster or small picture. We will be looking at the creative possibilities of hand stitching on paper. Beautiful results can be had using simple stitches but we will be experimenting with the versatile Herringbone stitch, playing with colour, scale, direction and texture to create striking designs. This will be a
fun, experimental evening for stitchers of all abilities.

Experiment with colour, texture and different fabrics to create your own unique cords — perfect for wrapping, tying and embellishing, or they can be turned into small vessels.
